Singapore stopover

We are considering flying with Singapore Airlines for our trip in August and thought it might also be a good opportunity to spend a couple of days in Singapore on the way home. I am interesed in any accomodation recommendations forumites can offer who have done this. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 girls aged 8 & 14 so looking for suitable family accomodation in a family friendly area which is easily accessible to family tourist activities, shopping, eateries etc. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated as we have no knowledge of Singapore or accomodation options available.
