talking about it can only help to inspire others to give too. I've seen a lot of those examples on this forum. Eg when i spoke about giving blood, travellers who hadn't thought of it before were immediately interested in doing the same. (My sole reason and hoped for outcome in talking about it)
These charities and causes need to be promoted by talking about them from personal experience rather than via something we read or hear. It also brings people up to date with what is needed and which places have the most need.
I know many people do quietly donate in the way you describe - giving that hurts - but will talk about their smaller efforts as a way of encouraging others to do the same.
