the kids shouts of excitement at the rare treat of 'manis' is enough to convince me that the very occassional treat brings some joy to their life, and so it is a 'need'. They are kids - they love lollies and trinkets - and appreciate them even more so, I suggest, than our kids who get lollies and trinkets on every supermarket trip by whinging and playing up.
Although I have to say the kids I visit love even more a huge red apple (which are a fair bit more expensive than lollies).
