Cost of living for locals

Hi all .
Just a question regarding the cost of living for locals , today we (miss 8 yr and Myself) grabbed a bluebird cab and got the driver to go via an Apotek and Wartel , during our drive he obviously went the looong way around but I subtly pointed out that I knew what was happening but didnt really care as the fare was fairly cheap anyway and he was quiet pleasant to chat with , anyways when we got back to the hotel I paid the fair and more or less doubled it .
The guys was wrapped to say the least and couldnt thank me enough which made me wonder what it must cost these guys to earn an income and survive these days ??
Any thoughts from long term folks here??
