Have you ever had someone recommend a restaurant to you in Bali and when you go there you have an awful meal? I have also been to the same restaurant twice and have had good and bad meals on different days. A lot of restaurants open with untrained staff and poor cooking skills. They get away with it for a while then close down and re open under a different name and catch some other victims. Always look for busy restaurants with a good turn over of food.
If the restaurant is on a main street, the rent is going to be very high and it is either going to be expensive or you will get tiny serves. Go in, sit down and order a drink. This will give you a chance to look at the menu and washroom.
If the toilets are dirty, you can bet that the kitchen will be as well. I usually carry a black felt pen in my handbag and write DIRTY TOILETS on the mirror in the toilet if the standard is not acceptable. Soap, towels etc (I do this in Australia as well)
Don't be an ugly Aussie. If the food is not up to standard or you get a small serving, send it back and complain to the manager in private. Be polite but request a replacement meal. If the restaurant has to start re cooking meals, they will soon start paying attention to the complaints. Follow up you verbal complaint with an EMAIL to the establishment concerned and threaten to blabb it all over the forum.
