some of the things that get written on here.
I still do beleive that Bali is a 3rd world country. If others opinions differ on that, its ok, we all interpret differently. My opinion when I refer to a 3rd world country is one that contains poor infrastructure, poverty and usually follows up with difficulties with government and Laws. Simple opinion maybe, but its mine.
I think you need to keep in perspective here that you have not paid to go to a 5 star resort in the Maldives or Maritius or even the Carribean. You have opted for a "cheap" holiday and you have chosen Bali. The operative word here is obviously "cheap". Whether you pay $900 or $1600, that is still cheap. (7 nights in New York in moderate accom from Aus will cost you about $3000 for arguments sake).
As I said, keep things in perspective, their way of life may not necessarily be the same as ours ..... but thats exactly why we all go there - because its different from here.
I am not adverse to getting feedback on hotels and restaurants, its great and the information is invaluable. But to blatantly disregard what Balis all about, thats ignorant of us. After all, what are we paying there for a meal? ... $10-$30, last time I checked, you can't take a family to Mcdonalds for that much. (and the toilets aren't often clean)
Please, please give bali a chance, the people are so wonderful and it provides such a good relaxing "cheap" holiday, its not Bali that has the problem .... its the expectations that we go there with. Go with an open mind, ready to combat anything on your "cheap" holiday that 'you' opted for, and you will have a good time.
Almost all the people on this forum that give advice to newbies and stick around after their first trip just love bali. I know I certainly do, ..... and for that price, so should you. As for standing up for myself, sure I am all for that, but you get what you pay for and when "I" opted for a "cheap" holiday, I don't think writing on mirrors or any other property is the way to go about it. And as someone else said here, you use your feet and you walk, never to return to that particular establishment.
