Calling all recent visitiors of Bali !!!

I will be in Bali (may) with my boyfriend. He is a bit hesitant about the street hawkers. So I am not sure if we should stay in Kuta. Can you suggest a combination of 2 places to stay.
We want:
* a nice pool to lay around
* to get a massage every day
* don't want to spend more than $50AUD/night for a double bed room
* would prefer the bali style bungalow with A/C
* would like to stay near the beach (if its worth swimming in)

I have been to bali about 6ys ago - but sure it has changed dramatically. Is Kuta's beach worth swimming in. I am open to places all over - would appreciate the advice of travellers as I'm sure there are great resorts that aren't in the brochures
