I had three weeks in Bali, just returning on the weekend. Kuta is very busy, and while worth visiting one or two time, would do what we did and stay out in Ubud, and Sanur. Ubud is inland, but is very nice with all the comforts of home. I stayed at a very nice place two streets back from the main area, very quiet for AUS$6 per night including breakfast. No Pool!, but Bali style.
The other place we stayed was Sanur, on the main strip in a small hotel with pool for AUS$20 per night including Breakfast. The rroms has AC and the staff just wonderful, it was the way the staff cared about us, that made our trip in Sanur. Would be happy to give you details on the places in more dept if you are interested. Anyway, you will have a great time in Bali, and yes, just walk up to the hotels and ask to see the rooms and the prices, and you can talk them down alittle.
