I visited Bali in January for one month and as it was my third time there I was well and truly "over" the hawkers. We decided to stay in Seminyak and were surprised to find that the hawkers were virtually non existent up there and its such a short taxi ride to the heart of Legian and Kuta that it wasnt a problem if we wanted to go out for dinner there. There are plenty of cheap places to stay in seminyak, many of which are not listed in any tourist brochures, we hired a house for three weeks which was excellent and it only took us two hours to find it, with a guide to drive us around to many different places. Ubud is also great if you want to have a pleasant holiday away from street hawkers and crazy tourists, again, plenty of places to stay if your on a budget. Also, Nusa Dua and Sanur if you want peace, but Nusa Dua will be a bit more expensive. Good luck.
