I was in Bali Nov. 1998. Kuta is overcrowded and very touristy. The only thing it has over other areas is the surf.
If you are not a surfer I would recommend Nusa Dua or Sanur. Both have excellent beaches and are not crowded. Sanur is a little less touristy, but both are great. The best bet on hotels is to walk in and talk to them when you get there. Almost all the hotels in these areas have Swimming pools. A book called Bali & Lombok published by the Lonly Planet is an excellent guide for hotels and other Bali info.
