I've been travelling to Bali for years, seen the cesspole of Kuta get worse, and finally decided to spend some time in Sanur and fell in love with the place. Lots of great places to stay for $50 (beachfron). Excellent massages along the beach in little massage huts, great beachfront restaurants (all reasonable prices) hawkers that understand what NO means...I could go on. Can swim in the beach and not worry about massive waves dunking you are being towed out by a rip. And you can wonder up to the black sand area and watch the balinese families at play in the weekends, a visual highlight of my trip. Talk to a travel agent to give you some names of places to stay. Only about 15-20K rp to go to Kuta.
