Landed in Bali, was there approx 2hrs then husband fainted, thought it may of been just the heat but it happened again in the morning. Decided to go to BIMC to get him checked out, only waited 5mins before being seen by medical staff. While lying on bed husband fainted again he was then transferred to ICU for further investigation. Administration staff advised that a 10 million deposit would be required before they would treat husband until our insurance would agreed. This was all fine as we new it was not pre existing as it had never happened before. I contacted insurance company and was speaking to a guy in London that stated that forms were required to be filled out by our GP inAustralia stating that it was not pre existing. So after all my calls to GP surgery & London making sure that they had received faxes everything was sorted and was informed by the staff at BIMC that they no longer required to add to my credit card, I think I was up to 30 million.
To make a long story short husband was discharged from hospital with medication that he was required to take until he saw his GP. Husband was fine discharged and told to return to hotel and that the insurance company would organise our trip home.
After waiting a few days at our hotel I called the insurance company contact person in London and was told that they were trying to get us a flight. WE did not realise that a flight from Bali would be so difficult but Apparently it is!!!! After daily emails and regular phone calls we finally flew out of Bali 13 days after the event and interestingly the same day we were supposed to fly out, but as the insurance company took over our arrangements we had to fly jetstar with a Stop over in Sydney and not direct to Melbourne. This additional stopover meant that it was 10 hrs to melb and not the usual 6 hrs, most exhausting and not in the best interest of my husband that was anxious anyway as to what has happened to him.
During conversations with our contact person I stated that we are bound to the hotel and would we be compensated for our hotel accommodation and it was clearly stated yes as it was out of our control and that when we return to Australia we would need to fill in the required forms to claim our holiday. We did this when we returned but as we used our accommodation to the full we were not able to claim any of our Accommodation or holiday expenses while waiting for our departure even though it was was out of our control.
So just a hint to read everything that is stated relating to travel insurance and do your research as to what it covered. Even if they insist you will be covered, get them to state it in writing it you are dealing with them over the phone or net.
I say though the care and attention that my husband received at BIMC was excellent and we cannot speak any more highly of them. The staff are a credit and care we received was amazing.
The difficult thing was the time difference between London and Bali as we had to think what time it would be over there when requesting more medication that my husband had run out of and have it confirmed as they would give him any ore unless the insurance company agreed.
So hopefully this information is useful as like me I always just jump on the net and purchase travel insurance and never had to use it. So in the future I will avoid Travel Insurance Direct and start researching other companies as we holiday in Bali every year.
