A West Australian resident has contracted HIV after getting a tattoo in Bali.
The state's Health Department says all of the evidence points to the tattoo in Indonesia as being the source of the infection.
In a statement the department has warned against people getting body art and piercings overseas, saying strict regulations and codes in Australia do not apply in developing countries.
It has urged anyone who has received tattoos recently in Bali to consult their GP and consider a test for HIV and other blood-borne diseases.
