Virgin Blue to Sydney

Does anyone know how strict the baggage allowance is? I mean do they check much when you say your taking just cabin baggage only but might be carrying about say 15kg!

I begrudge paying $30 for 15kg when I can easily carry it on! advice please asap as flying soon!
