Going in a tour group is way too restrictive. Bali is probably the safest place in SE Asia. But of course you need to use basic common sense. Also, tour groups tend to only go to rip-off shops/restaurants (the tour companies get kickbacks). I am sure you'd enjoy Bali much more on your own.

Seems like you're American & 20ish? There are many fun/interesting day trips/tours you could do in Bali & you will meet people on them & at your hotel.

A good aircon car & driver costs about US$45/day so it's cheap to go wherever you want, especially if you can share the cost with others.

December is very busy (Aussie school hols) so you need to book your accommodation soon.

If you post your budget, length of stay & interests you will get lots of useful info here.

I highly recommend that you get the latest Rough Guide or Lonely Planet Guide to Bali to help you decide where you want to go. There is far more to Bali than the coastal tourist strip.

I am often in Bali alone & feel safer there than I do here in Perth.

BTW, in the countryside you will see farmers leading their duck flocks around with a flag on a length of bamboo. Some tour group leaders do the same. A source of amusement for the Balinese.

Be sure to get good travel insurance & please don't rent a motorcycle unless you are a competent rider & have an International Lic. Always wear a helmet & never ride after drinking.
