I have had Dengue Fever in Bali. Believe me, the symptons are far more severe than flu.
It would be best to take him to a doctor. The Doctor can send off a blood sample for analysis. If it is malaria which has similar symptons, the blood sample has to be taken in the middle of a malaria attack.
In my case, Dengue Fever knocked me around for six months and I was a very healthy 24 year old before Dengue Fever struck.
It took six months for the doctors to work out that it was Dengue Fever not Malaria.
