leaving gear in beach food shacks

i have never been to Indonesia but I've been told that most beaches have food outlet shacks right on the beach and you can leave yore gear in them while you have a surf. I am talking about really small one man food outlets. Does anyone know if this is right and if it is safe to do so.(leave yore gear in these places) I will be travelling by motor bike with boards and packs on the bike. Probably starting at Kuta and then gonig to Balian and other parts of Indonesia.
