thanks shaz, randsurfer & Maree for the info. Did not know the shacks were called Warungs. I've gota bit to learn. I will not be staying at Kuta much but moving around other surf spots in Indonesia by motor bike. On occasions may be arriving early morning to catch the breaks before the wind comes up and might not have time to find accommodation so might have to leave pack, camera etc with one of these Warung people. A mate just told me about a guy who did this at Balian beach with a bloke who seemed to be setting up the Warung for the day. He took their gear for "safekeeping' but was gone when they came back from the surf. It seems he might have been a scam artist who did not own the Warung. Maybe just saw them walking along the beach and jumped behind the counter to fool them. Has anybody heard of anything like this happening. How do you make sure that the bloke behind the counter hasent just jumped in there to invite you to leave your gear with him; perhaps I'm worrying too much.
