Travel adivise for Lombok and Sumbawa

Gday all.
Myself and two others are heading to Bali this sunday, and are planning on heading over to Sumbawa via Lombok. We are touring and surfing. Just wondering what the best way to do this would be. I have been told that hiring a car in Bali is a good way to go as transport in sumbawa is limited, however I am aware of the risks of driving in Indonesia, especially Bali. What is it like driving once you're out of the main tourist areas and in lombok? Also what is the current feel like on lombok and sumbawa, as these are predominantly Muslim areas? Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.
