I live in Southwest Sumbawa, and this is a very safe, friendly place. Driving is easy because there is very little traffic. The tourist facilities here are fairly sparse, but there are a few hotels. I'm not a surfer, but I've been told that the surf here is incredible. The beaches are definitely beautiful - white sand and deserted.
Driving yourself is a good idea, because transport here is limited and not always as comfortable as a tourist might want.
