Hubby spent a week surfing at Kuta, Lombok a few weeks ago. To get there from Bali was a bit of a hassle - ended up going with Perama - bus picked him up at hotel, drive to Padang Bai, rust bucket boat trip, then drive to Kuta - a long, tiring journey. Planes won't take boards. Hired a bike with a board rack in Kuta as the surf breaks are spread out. He was staying in a good hotel with good security, but other guys weren't so lucky - one had his bike stolen and the owner expected him to pay for it - $1,500US!!! Another guy's bike was held for ransom, of all things! Surf dropped off so hubby bailed, no idea what happened about the bikes.
Otherwise, he enjoyed Kuta - far less people, noise, traffic and constant hassles than in the Bali Kuta. Also great food, especially seafood. There are internet facilities. Take plenty of Rupiah with you as there are no ATMs. Just be careful with your possessions & lock your bike at all times. Have fun :)
