Digital photo help required !!!

New digital camera taken to Bali, Memmory card is soon full with just over 100 photo's.
Ok take to digital shop and have transfered onto disc, put into case to look at when get home. Delete photo's from Camera...
Get home to Perth and load disc into computer - NO IMAGES, will not load !!!!
Ok - starting to panick now, where's all the great holiday photo's. Put disc in desperation into the dvd player - presto can see our photo's now huge on big screen TV.
Doh, bum looks biger than ever !!! Don't say anything.
Question is : Why i can view it on the DVD player but not my computer?
Should i have requested the images to be saved in normal pc mode ie windows as jpg's ??
