They maybe saved in a file format such as tif or even eps possibly not supported by your computer......there are heaps of free image viewers on the net look for one that supports as many file types as possible and open the files directly from within it.
Another situation is it may have been saved as a "Kodak" picture CD some PCs dont like it....
