A recent thread about streaking got an amazing number of responses and got me thinking about what would really bother me [or not] in Bali. I'm not talking here about really dreadful things, just the things which we experience for ourselves, or read about on the Forum. Points out of ten.
Being kept awake night after night by noisy behaviour at the hotel. 10 out of 10.
Being stood over and cheated [like the threads on the cheating women in Poppies 2]. 10 out of 10.
Being at a hotel where people have sex in the pool. 9 out of 10.
Being smoked over when I'm eating. 8 out of 10.
Officials trying to get unjustified bribe money. Between 2 out of 10 and 6 out of 10, depending on the circumstances. [But 0 out of 10 if it's something like getting $200 worth of wine in by paying $50. Or paying peanuts to a traffic cop for not wearing a motor bike helmet, rather than going to court.]
Seeing various types of loutish behaviour by groups of young Australians, including blatant streaking. 5 out of 10.
Other things which, according to various posts, seriously upset some people:
Girls wearing bikinis in the street.
Girls topless on the beach, or at the pool.
Men or women wearing G-strings.
Men in "better" restaurants in shorts and singlets etc.
People who have unusual hairstyles, tattoos, piercings etc.
Openly gay people.
Discreet skinny dipping in the pool at night or on quiet beaches.
All 0 out of 10.
I can't really speak from the point of view of a Balinese person, [although I have a Balinese daughter-in-law and lots of Balinese friends], but if I lived in the vicinity of Jl Dyana Pura, I would rate the all night noise coming from the bars and night clubs as 10 out of 10, which is far higher than I would rate the various other things which allegedly upset the locals.
