speaking in broken English unintentionally. I don't know if I was subconsciuosly reflecting the phrasing that I hear when the Balinese are speaking English or if I was over-simplifying my dialogue just to make it easier to communicate.
I also found myself modifying that style depending on the level of comprehension that I perceived I was dealing with. That is, if I though the person had a good grasp I would speak near perfect English.
I did ascertain from some Balinese if they thought it was helpful of me to correct their pronunciations and I was often requested to do so in their interests.
The last thing I would wish is to be condescending so at times it was a dilemma for me.
