we're still unpacking, so I'll just make one comment. Do not change money at the airport! The exchange there was approx. 8000 Rp. to the USD. Everywhere else it was 8600 to 8650 without commission. The commission guys advertised up to 8900, but I didn't even bother to check them out. It's difficult enough just making sure you got what you expected, without having to figure out the changers take. And do yourself a favor and bring a Calculator! So many things cost hundreds of thousands of Rupes...100,000 rupes is about 12.00 US. Get a grip on what each note is worth, 20,000 is about 2.50, 10,000 = 1.20, 5,000 = .60, 1000 = .12, 500 = .06
The taxi (taksi) fare from the airport to Kuta is a fixed 16,500 or about 2 dollars. I imagine you can talk a driver into taking you for 3 or 4 US without exchanging anything, or you might exchange $20 at the airport just to get you going. Taxi's around town cost 2000 rp for short trips, which should give you an idea about cost of living and what the working man earns. Consider this before you agree to give someone 100,000 for a ride to Ubud. We paid 80k and I'm sure we could have done better. Drop me a line and I'll try to give you any info I've got.
