I felt very safe in Bali, with my wife and two children, in Kuta, Ubud and in between. It is safe now, but I am uncertain about after the election. (See Maggie's posting) Everyone in Bali supports the Sukarno party, as my cab driver referred to it, and if they lose, There will be, at the very least, a pall over much of Bali. However, the outer areas probably won't notice one way or the other. These are the nicest areas anyway if you don't mind roughing it. It's certainly not Nusa Dua.
