Do not change $A to Rupiah in Australia, you will get a better rate in Bali.
When you buy your VOA at the Bali Airport, give them a $A50 note and you will receive your change in Rupiah. You can then pay for your taxi to the hotel with this Rupiah.
Change your money in Kuta next day. Their rates are about Rp 200 per $A1 better than the airport.
Look carefully at the Rp 100,000 notes as some are forgeries. A real Rp 100,000 note has sharp letters not fazzy letters and also has a watermark of a man's head.
Taxi drivers always claim that they do not have change, even though it could be the end of their shift. Use your big notes at supermarkets, post offices etc and hang on to the small notes for taxi drivers.
