The Goo is great for surfers. Not so good for swimmers - rips can be dangerous. Your teenagers should do their shopping when you are staying in Seminyak - even there the traffic to Legian & Kuta is vile at all times, and, as Stephjoy says, particularly late arvo - in fact from around 2.30pm on.
From Canggu to Legian/Kuta would be quite a long cab trip. Calling a Bluebird is sometimes not an option as cabbies hate getting caught in traffic as much as we do &, unless in the area, there can be a long wait.
It's really hard trying to get a holiday together that satisfies the wants/needs of all family members, especially if one is a surfer (as I well know). Good luck.
