Under law all foreigners must be registered with the police .....a large fine and imprisonment if not i.e very signifacant corruption payment if caught and many are. Now would not be a good time to test.
Regisration depends upon your visa or Kitas type and can be for up to a year [there are all sorts of conditions and periods it applies for] but for tourists it is every visit.
It is the responsability of the Hotel or villa to register you and there is NO CHARGE .....THEY must do it and it is free.
