Since I started travellimg in Indonesia in 1975, I have always registered my passport details with the hotel. Indonesian citizens have to show their KTP.
When I was travelling in India last year, I had to supply a photocopy of the first two pages of my passport PLUS a photocopy of my Indian visa at every hotel I stayed at.
