we have always had to register guests with police on arrival and do not pay a charge. In fact as the local police office now no longer deal with it and we have to send to another office 25kms away we can do so by fax. It is for everyone's protection - should anything happen. So they can trace where guests have been staying and are planning on going if anything should happen.
It seems though that for KITAS holders (here in Lombok anyway) the registration will now only cover 3 months rather than the old 12 months and there is a fee.
