Melb to Bali - via Perth? Air Asia?

I think it may be cheaper for us to go to Perth domestic, maybe stay a night and then Air Asia to Bali. Has anyone tried this way and what do you think of Air Asia. We went Malaysian Airlines via KL last time and while it was great to visit KL it took a lot of time out of our Bali time.
