if you can't get a cheap flight to Perth from Melb or from Perth to Bali on AA it doesn't work out much cheaper than direct from Melb. Some flights to Perth from Melb can be pretty exxy... All the flights I booked were promo fares.... even the Jetstar home.
We flew direct with Garuda this year( only 2 of us)with 8 days accomodation and it cost $1,011 each, you have to find a cheaper option when travelling with kids! :)
