iphone in Bali

Hi
I am thinking about upgrading to an Iphone, I have a plan with Telstra but wondered if I can get it unlocked in Bali and then use a local sim.
Plus if I can do that will I be able to use the free wifi around town?

Also if I do get it unlocked will it break anything, so that when I get home and put my testra sim in all will be ok?
