If you have not already bought an i-phone you can buy them unlocked direct from the apple shop online, put any sim card in and they will work and you will have no problems.
Whilst in Bali recently I used my i-phone with a Proxl sim card, I could text as per normal, phone as per normal. Internet could be accessed using the sim card. I could not however open up my email account, no big problem I would go into an internet cafe such as Gloria Jeans, buy a cup of coffee and had no problems using the i-phone via their wifi.
I have since found out that I was doing something wrong and have sorted it out for next trip.
There is a website which is an excellent resource for i-phone questions and answers by i-phone users....www.whirlpool.net
the posters/forum members are very friendly.
As for your telstra sim card you should not have any problems with that in the i-phone, just be careful of using your i-phone for the internet with telstra as it is quite expensive.
