weight?

I often wonder if we ever think about the safety factor of taking more than allowed weight on board considering everyone does it?A friend of mine a pilot says weight allowances are there for the safety factor of how a plane flys e.g.distribution of weight of plane,fuel to be used for each flight to accomodate weight factors,stablization of plane in the air and take off etc. a lot of air disasters overseas have been due to overloading of planes so when we all smuggle and advise people to take as much as they can in their hand luggage are we really doing any favours to anyone?just a thought?
