My wife, 13-year old daughter, and I are planning to visit Bali next year. We're thinking about May 2006 partly to celebrate my birthday and it sounds like a good time of the year to visit. We'd like to really experience the Bali culture and its people so we're leaning away from the resort approach and would prefer more of a ‘backdoor' slant, perhaps even staying with a Balinese family (if that's done).
I'd love some help from the more experienced travelers that are on this forum by responding to these questions:
What are the best ways to get the best value and rates for flights from the US to Bali, preferably leaving from Atlanta or New York as a second choice. (We live in the mountains of NC)
Are trades ever done? We live in a beautiful part of the world as well in a spacious redwood chalet. I'm wondering if people who are living in Bali would be interested in trading living spaces for 2-3 weeks.
Is May really an OK time to visit weather wise, etc.?
What are some of our options for accommodations that will give allow us to really experience the culture and people?
What should we make sure we avoid (tourist traps, rip-offs, etc.)?
If we stay fairly budget-minded but not stingy what can we expect a 3 week stay in Bali to cost for 2 adults and 1 child? A range would be helpful.
What 5-10 things are ‘must sees' and ‘must experience?'
Any and all input is greatly appreciated. I've had this on my ‘dream list' for more years than I care to admit, so I'd really like to make the most of our time over there while still being able to rest and relax.
