Germany has written off nearly US$30 million worth of Indonesian debt, on the grounds that at least half of that amount is invested in education and poverty alleviation in Indonesia.
It is hoped that this gesture will inspire similar actions from other countries.
In my opinion, aiding education and fighting poverty will do a lot more towards alleviating the terrorist threat than offering weapons to the military. And even if it didn't, it's still a good thing to do.
