Don't you love the trainees? (for newbies these guys are doing work experience from the school of tourism. You can pick them because they always wear white shirts and black skirt/pants)
In a hotel where we were staying our first day happenned to coincide with the new batch of trainees' first day on the job. A beautiful young girl with very little English had served us breakfast and we tipped her with Rp.5000 (last of the big tippers) she thanked us sweetly and then gracefully left for the kitchen, tray held high. Next minute we saw her run full tilt down the back stairs and high tail it up the road to return 5 minutes later with two bags of "bunkus" from the warung nearby. She was obviously shouting her friend to nasi campur too. That was such a good feeling.
Two days later same time same place but her friend, equally beautiful and graceful but more shy served us. We'd had such fun the last time, that this time we tried the Rp.10000 tip. Once more the shy thank you and the graceful exit to the kitchen. She was greeted, we think judging by the cheers, with a standing ovation from the rest of the kitchen staff!
That's the most pleasure we ever got for $2.50.
