I still hire scooters in Bali but dont just ride around everywhere because the damage bill is always in the back of my mind so I am very cautious.

When I was on Koh Phangan Thailand a guy in the next hotel got a flat tire on his bike soon after hiring it, he had it fixed on the side of the road and on return to the hotel he told the hirer about the flat. The hirer then demanded the damage excess in the contract be paid, he refused and the police were called, he then paid!
Thailand may be worse than Bali because you cant usually hire a bike without leaving your passport as security so no pay no passport but I still wouldn't want to argue forever about repair excess charges I didnt read correctly in the small print.
