Hi there Madi C ... my wife and I live in Candidasa, so hope we can help :-)
First question, do you need to stay at either of these places ?
Before we moved to CD, we stayed for a few nights at the Bali Palms (we, and others think the use of the word 'resort' is a stretch). They run the places as timeshare / holiday points (or some other nonsence), so if you are staying as a non owner, they will be at you a bit about buying into the place. They seem to keep selling the Shangrila, but from what people have told us, they have sold more than the amount of time in a year - so people are always being bumped to the Palms.
The Palms is ok, kind of like a Quentin Tarantino movie set around 1977 in Mexico (he he) ... if I had to chose from either, it would be the Palms. The Shangrila is much smaller, much smaller pool, and (to me) kind of a bit claustrophobic.
The Palms is only just out of town ... taking the Candidasa Welcome Arch as the start of CD - it is just before the arch as you are coming up from the south west.
As CD is just 1.2km long from end to end, it is easy to walk it - there are no side streets, just the main road. We have hills on one side, and the ocean on the other, with just a narrow strip of flat land between them ... its very nice, we hope you will like it here.
Plenty of things to do from here as well - if you are looking for ideas, do a search of my name 'Mr Sinter' and look for my posts on Candidasa ... lots of info there.
If you have any more questions, I will look out for them over the next few days :-)
Enjoy Candidasa !
