Tipping...... again

I know this question has probably come up before...

But I am more interested to know what sort of low tip might be offensive?? I have no idea what a dollar is worth to a balinese worker?

Eg, a few times last year I asked a cleaner to open my hotel door for me. Both times he was standing within 10m of my room and took about 20 seconds to open for me.

I gave him 5,000 one time (it was literally all I had on me). I apologised. Was that sort of low tip an insult? He might not even expect a tip for such an easy task?? Note: this guy was not our normal room cleaner. Just a worker who happened to be in the corridor with a key.

I am often hesitant to tip because I don't want to tip too low, but I dont want to start tipping too high (it all adds up when you are on a very tight budget with 4 kids).

The last thing I want to do is give some money, and have that person feel insulted, like I just gave them some scraps.

Thanks for any thoughts.
