I have hired a scooter in Bali 12 times.

Go to the NRMA/RAC and buy a International Driving Permit (IDP). You will need to show them your Australian motorcycle license and give them a passport photograph.

There are road blocks every day in Kuta checking for IDPs, rego papers and wearing helmets.

There are plenty of people renting motorcycles in Jalan Legian. I pay Rp 35,000 per day for a few days or Rp 20,000 per day for a one month hire.
