I usually travel to Bali solo, so the phone with local sim is used multiple times daily. Either texting or calling home, contacting my driver or friends in Bali about meeting up or days out etc, and I also use the mobile internet for Facebook, keeping up to date on news etc.

I also use my phone for taking most of my holiday pics these days and can put them straight up on facebook within minutes.

When I travel with family and/or friends, it's handy for organising meeting up etc.

I have also used it to book restaurants etc.

I can also do online or phone banking with it, since I use ATMs for my spending money - I can transfer funds between accounts if needed, or just find out what my account balance is, if my pay has gone in...

The list goes on. I use my phone quite a bit on holiday, just as I do at home.

My olds, on the other hand, don't use them as much as me, though they do both get local SIMs. They call the grandkids at home but otherwise it's mostly just the odd "Where are you?" text among ourselves if we're out shopping or similar.
