Maybe this is a backlash from the hotel management against people who bring in 'slabs' etc and sit around the pool all day drinking their byo beer rather than purchasing from the hotel - I can't see the necessity to BYO in Bali when bars abound and the hotel prices aren't really that prohibitive. Unless you need to drink a dozen cans in a sitting that is!
Try bringing cartons of booze into a hotel anywhere in Australia and see what reaction you'd get.
