I would not bother with the stick.
If your laptop is less than six years old, it should have a WiFi antenna in the lid.
If you go to a WiFi hotspot such as Gloria Jeans in Kuta, you can use your laptop to talk to a laptop or PC in Oz using Skype. If you have Skype credit you can send SMSs to Oz, though using a local SIM in your unlocked GSM mobile is cheaper still to send SMSs to Oz.
