Drinks on the plane

We went to Bali last year, travelling both ways with Pacific Blue.
After clearing Customs in Melbourne, we bought a few soft drinks and water to have on the plane.
We did the same thing at Denpasar on the way back but our drinks were confiscated on entry to the departure lounge.
My question is - are you allowed to carry on bottled (soft) drinks?
