Cash v Travellers Cheques...Rate

Hi,
Can anyone please let me know the difference in Exchange Rate for AUD Cash and AUD Travellers Cheques.

My folks are going for 3 months, I would prefer them to take Travellers cheque for security reasons, but they are concerned the rate of exchange will be poor.

From memory I didnt think there was a big difference in rates offered.

Also (please) what sort of exchange rate do you get from ATM machines?
"Pop" says Commonwealth only give 7500rp / $.
Surely it must be better than this when the street rate is now 9065rp.?
