We stayed at Kuta Townhouses for 1 week in a 2 bedroom apartment, in the apartment was my wife & I, our two children and my mother.

Location:

Located on Poppies I, we never had a problem getting a bluebird taxi to take us to the door of the hotel though it is quite frustrating going up and down poppies every time you need to return to the hotel as Poppies I is very busy with tourists, sellers and scooters, and not really wide enough for cars. It is a 4 or 5 minute walk to JL Legian or the Beach Road, depending on which direction you are wanting to head. Walking is easy and I highly recommend hiring a scooter to zip up and down poppies and short distances around Kuta/Legian etc.

Facilities:

The pool is nice, though quite cold for Bali standards. Both pools have a shallow end for kids separated by an internal wall which then drops down to the deeper pool. The outside of the pools are not children friendly at all, which given the market they target, and the pool having a childrens part, is quite disappointing. The smaller of the two is infinity style which children can easily slip into the dip on the edge and hurt themselves, the larger pool has steep steps with sharp edges. The grassed area around the pool is on a slurry of mud which becomes very slippery.
The hotel has a small fitness room though I did not use this room so cant comment. It has a very nice bar area for watching the AFL. They do quite well out of Slushies in the bar and between 4 and 6 have happy hour where you get 2 for 30k which is excellent value.

Food:

I was very disappointed in the food quality, other hotels I have stayed in has an excellent breakfast and good restaurant so during the day or evening, if you do not feel like going out, you can dine within the confines of the hotel. KTH does have a restaurant and room service, though breakfast was boring and poorly prepared, also the juice was terrible. Room service was disappointing, I ordered a Mee Georing one day and it came out having used 2 minute instant noodles as the base. We tried most things on the menu and all (Except the Spring Rolls) were bland, boring and disappointing.

Staff:

All the staff I met were friendly though I feel maybe not happy in their jobs, a few times I asked them to consult their manager and come back to me with an answer (On trivial things such as one day the TV was having issues and I wanted to know when they were fixing the antenna), and each time they pointed towards the Australian manager and told me to ask him. Once I had done so, they would come over and find out what the answer was and had a look of relief on their face that they did not have to ask. I also nick named a few 'Towel Nazi's', KTH has an absolute obsession with theft and I find it ridiculous. You have to sign out every towel you use and sign that if you don't return it, you'll be automatically charged 200k (For very very average towels). They count your knifes and forks on checkout and their is a list as long as your arm of prices of items if lost or damaged. I have never stayed anywhere that had this policy so in your face, and it has really put me off.

Room Quality:

The room was spacious , air con worked well (once I got the message to the housekeeping staff that I was sick of them turning it off), hot water was plentiful and as we had a ground floor apartment, the outside area overlooking the pool was great. Also the apartment had Australian power points which made life easy. A full size fridge and reasonable lounge/dining furniture. On a negative though, the beds were extremely uncomfortable, lumpy and the sheets poor quality. Night time was impossible to sleep due to the noise of the laneway and the poor design of having a staff access pathway right outside our bedroom window. Bedroom curtains were also opened daily by housekeeping which meant that during the day, staff, workman, anybody, could see into our bedroom and see our belongings. Every day I shut them, yet housekeeping never got the message that maybe I wanted them left shut. Also, their were minor building works going on, which randomly were done at any time of the day or night and were very noisy with workman singing up and down the walkway behind our room. Our master bedroom also did not have a TV though it had a powerpoint and antenna point. The shower was mouldy and smelt.

Overall:

At the price, you are getting a lot of bang for your buck. It is good 'Value' accommodation. If I were to relate KTH to a car, It is like hiring a 10 year old Kia, whilst it still does the same as more expensive offerings, it does not do it nearly as well.
Personally, I would not stay there again unless their was a real need (Other accommodation full, staying in a large group, etc). In future, I would definitely rather pay an extra $50 or so a night and get something of higher quality. There is nothing completely horrible about KTH, just my standards are higher than what they offer. I can see why people like KTH and repeatedly stay there, though for me and my money, i'd rather pay a little more in future, and get something nicer.
